Skyrim skill books: every free skill point on the map

Skyrim skill books are ordinary-looking books that raise one skill by a point the first time you read them. There are 90 titles in the game, five for each of the 18 skills, and every copy is a free level in a skill you might otherwise spend hours grinding.

Our map pins 122 places where a skill book lies out in the open world of Skyrim, not counting copies in shop inventories or random loot. This page explains how the books work, how many exist per skill, and the spots that are easiest to collect.

How skill books work

Reading a skill book raises the matching skill by exactly one point, the same as one level of training. The rules are simple:

  • Only the first read of each title counts. A second copy of the same book does nothing, so there are at most 90 free points in total, five per skill.
  • Your current skill level does not matter. A book gives one point at skill 15 and one point at skill 95, so it is worth saving high-value books for the slow late levels.
  • The book is read the moment you pick it up or open it, even from a shelf in a shop. To save a book for later, do not click it; leave it where it lies and come back.
  • After making a skill Legendary, books you already read for that skill do not work again.
  • Skill books are worth at least 50 gold, much more than ordinary books, which is a quick way to spot one in a pile.

The Oghma Infinium from Hermaeus Mora's quest is a different thing: it gives five points to every skill in one of three paths, and it is not a skill book.

Why some skills have more copies than others

Every skill has five titles, but the developers placed some titles in several places. Our map shows 11 Archery copies and 10 Light Armor copies against only 4 for Sneak. The extra copies are useful when you missed one: the Light Armor book Rislav the Righteous, for example, sits in more than one bandit camp, so you will run into it eventually even without hunting for it.

The 122 markers only count books lying in the world. Many skill books also appear as random loot in boss chests, are carried by named characters, or are sold by Urag gro-Shub in the Arcanaeum at the College of Winterhold and by general stores. Buying is the reliable fallback for any title you cannot find.

Easy skill books near the start

Whiterun is the best early stop. Dragonsreach holds the Pickpocket book Aevar Stone-Singer and the Smithing book The Armorer's Challenge, both lying in the open in the Jarl's quarters and Farengar's rooms. Carlotta Valentia's house has the Enchanting book Enchanter's Primer, and the Temple of Kynareth has the Restoration book Withershins. The Drunken Huntsman has The Black Arrow, v2 for Archery.

Outside the city, Guldun Rock giant camp has The Knights of the Nine for Heavy Armor on top of the rock, Silent Moons Camp has the Smithing book Light Armor Forging, and the Hall of the Dead in Whiterun holds Death Blow of Abernanit for Block. Filter the map by skill book to see the rest, grouped by hold.

Skill books in dungeons and homes

Some of the best-known copies are in places you visit for other reasons. The Tower of Mzark in Blackreach has The Armorer's Challenge next to the Elder Scroll lectern. Redwater Den from Dawnguard has Battle of Red Mountain for Block. Proudspire Manor, Hjerim and other player homes each contain a skill book or two once furnished, and the Creation Club homes Myrwatch and Goldenhills Plantation both hold Enchanting and Alchemy books respectively.

Because a skill book counts only once, the smart habit is to check every bookshelf and bedside table in a dungeon before leaving. Books cost nothing to carry compared with the point they give.

Skyrim skill books: every free skill point on the map: FAQ

How many skill books are in Skyrim?

90 different titles, five for each of the 18 skills. Our map marks 122 open-world copies in Skyrim because several titles appear in more than one place.

Do skill books work more than once?

No. Each title gives one point the first time you read it. Reading a second copy of the same book does nothing.

Does my skill level matter when reading a skill book?

No, a book always gives one point regardless of the skill's current level. Saving books for the slow high levels gets the most out of them.

How do I tell if a book is a skill book?

Skill books are worth at least 50 gold, far more than ordinary books, and reading one shows a skill increase message. Titles are listed on this page by skill.

Can I buy skill books?

Yes. Urag gro-Shub at the College of Winterhold's Arcanaeum and many general stores sell them, and they turn up as random loot in dungeon chests.

Is the Oghma Infinium a skill book?

No. It is a Daedric artifact from Hermaeus Mora's quest that gives five points to each skill in the warrior, mage or thief group, once.
